Last year in the United States, 27 police officers died in the line of duty, while over 400 civilians died at the hands of police officers—perhaps more, since there isnt a national tracking database for police-on-civilian deaths. In truth, policing isnt actually all that dangerous a job, when we get right down to it. In order, the ten MOST dangerous jobs today are: Fishing Logging Aircraft pilots and engineers Garbage collection Roofing Structural iron and steel work Construction Farming Truck driving Mining And most of the above arent paid nearly so well as police work, nor do these workers tend to receive fat pensions when they retire. So if we step away from the emotionalism we can see that the mythos of the high risk, thin blue line far exceeds the reality of the job. The mythos exists in part to elevate the role and presumed sacrifice of the police in the minds of the general public. Its rather like labeling our soldiers as heroes. Not all soldiers are heroes. But we convey that title upon them because we associate their job with high risk and potential sacrifice. Imagine if we thanked our fishermen, loggers, pilots, garbage men, roofers, iron workers, construction crews, farmers, truck drivers and miners for their risk and sacrifice? Can we even consider the parallels, or is there something special about a person who takes risks for reasons that tug on our sense of patriotism versus our economic needs? Hmmmm.....!
