Last year, on ash wednesday, my wife and I were leading a home group with our church. We wanted to post some artistic representations of Jesus and the disciples. We quickly noticed that there is a shortage of non white Christ imagery. Whats more, I was troubled by how often Judas was depicted as a person of color. Then tonight as I read officer Wilsons description of #MikeBrown as a demon, it becomes obvious that this system of representation creates a world in which black bodies are demonized and white bodies are glorified as normative. When Ridley Scott was casting the voice of God, he wanted a voice that was pure and innocent so the particular voice chosen belonged to a white boy. Our systems of representation promote a broken social system in which certain bodies are elevated above other bodies. In this system, bodies of color are crushed and oppressed by the weight of the few who could really care less about them, and the masses who seem to care less about any of it. Its time to get educated on race in America, on patterns of systematic oppression, and on the reality of white privilege. #fergusondecision
