Late morning update: stubborn wedge or backdoor front is hanging - TopicsExpress

Late morning update: stubborn wedge or backdoor front is hanging tough over southern North Carolina, just north of Charlotte, and, as far as I could determine about 30 miles south of I-40 to the Black Mountain area. Showers are occurring to our north and northeast and even over NW Burke County an area of non-severe rain showers had developed and is moving eastward. I think this wedge front is not going to be that easy to dislodge and force northward, even though a good southerly to south-southwesterly flow is setting up to our south. A point in our favor, though, is that the best dynamics are still to our west over middle Tennessee and the western Cumberland Plateau. I still expect a few thunderstorms to break out this afternoon and any that develop along the slowly retreating wedge front could produce damaging winds but I dont believe coverage is going to be widespread. Actually, Im feeling a little better about this storm system because it appears were getting a better handle on events. The Storm Prediction Center has actually expanded the SLIGHT RISK area eastward in its latest update to include all our three counties. The reason I believe is because an organized line of thunderstorms is expected to move into the counties early Tuesday morning, somewhere between midnight and daybreak. Organized thunderstorms are re-developing right now to the south and west of Nashville TN and thats the closest area of significant weather to us at the moment. There is very little going on in eastern Tennessee and just isolated showers over northern Georgia. The thunderstorm complex thats organizing over middle Tennessee is the first severe weather event that well have to watch for. All the severe storm parameters will be in place early Tuesday morning so I dont expect a lot, if any, weakening as this complex crosses the mountains and moves into our area. Right now damaging winds seem to be the primary threat with this system but that by no means rules out a tornado or two or severe hail. Tune up those weather radios and put them in alarm mode for tonight and make sure to finish your preparations (food supply, first aid, insurance papers) this afternoon. Make sure your smartphones are full charged as well. The Burke Weather Team will continue updates throughout the day and night.--Steve.
