Late night rant... 2 things people say (ALL the time! Really.) - TopicsExpress

Late night rant... 2 things people say (ALL the time! Really.) that amuse and befuddle while making them seem really ignorant of what they are seeing. Then I respond in the local dialect (people seem to relate to DJ/Producers here)and follow up with the why so the speaker can understand what it sounds like to the receiver of this little nugget. Comment if you have stories like this of your own. 1) You: Telling a fine art photographer (whos photos you have already seen) this: I LOVE your work! You must have a really expensive camera! ME: I absolutely loved hearing your music! Your computer must be very powerful. Why? Just as I dont know if your music was generated with analog, traditional, digital, or even kitchen instruments, and I DEFINITELY dont know how you mastered or processed it, I bet you probably have little idea if those photos were taken with an ancient film camera or top of the line, modern DSLR pro body. Or maybe (Like many of mine!) an entry level used hobbyist camera that cost 1/20th of said pro body. 2) Telling a working photographer they bump into somewhere: Thats a big camera, it must take AMAZING photos! ME: Wow, those CD players on stage are huge with LED screens and everything! I bet your mixing skills are legendary! ~~~or~~~~ ME: Those running shoes youre wearing look super clean. I bet you run really fast! Why? If you bump into a working photographer (most of them) while you are at a local event somewhere, just like a DJ (most of them) in a club, their job is to re-express content, (ie. the same songs remixed vs the same people in same club wearing different clothes) in a way that is appealing to experience, has some style, and leaves the listener (viewer) wanting more. Having remarkable technical skill and knowing how to use the big equipment is usually (should be) a given, even at this local level. Yes, having quality (old or new) gear can possibly make your goals of greatness achievable with less headache, quality gear does not predict greatness, but (without hiding behind money to burn), is actually an eventual symptom of greatness. This doesnt even begin to describe studio artists or the caliber of their content and path to get there.
