Late night viewing was a Danish film called “Applause”. No it is not the musical “Applause” but a flick starring an amazing Danish actress named Paprika Steen. She plays Thea, a gorgeous, fading yet mesmerizing stage actress who is currently playing “Who Afraid of Virginia Wolf” on the Copenhagen stage. The film cuts between her current life and scenes from the play. She gives a brilliant performance in both lives and you swear she looks like Elizabeth Taylor in the film while on stage. 18 months prior she abandoned her husband and her two small children because of her heavy drinking (like Martha in “Virginia Wolf”) Now Thea want to get back into the lives of the two small boys. Her ex-husband is agreeable for her to see the kids since she has now stopped drinking. She sees them once a week and she lavish them with toys. Of course she wants to see them more at least one week at a time. The ex-husband beautifully played by Michael Falch is against this because he believes Thea is emotionally in secure. The film is really about applying greasepaint of the daily mundane over the damaged life of Thea. Paprika Steen is up to the task and once again a brilliant performance. It is on NETFLEX.
