Late on this Friday afternoon, as dusk approached, I went for a long walk along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The heavens were dark, gray and threatening, reminiscent of the slate gray snow skies of mid-winter; the air was cool and damp, foreshadowing the forecasted rain of the overnight hours, and a raw breeze was blowing, rustling the golden yellow foliage on the trees while twirling other fallen leaves through the air and across the browning river banks. And the river waters, flowing incessantly southward toward, over a thousand miles away, the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, had a primordial power that awe-inspiring. And, with the slate gray heavens in the high background, and with the fallen leaves swirling through the damp, raw air, the flowing river waters had a haunting and ethereal beauty that touched and inspired the deepest parts of the soul. And, as dusk approached, thick fog shrouded the skyline of Minneapolis even as the gray afternoon slowly gave way to the blackness of night. And, as I walked along the river, reflecting on the past, enjoying the moment and looking ahead to the coming challenge, I felt a kinship and connection to the natural world around me that enable me to gather strength, energy, perspective and passion to fully confront the coming challenge with a smile on my lips and a twinkle in my eyes.
