Late sixties, a friend Steve Hanks did etch-a-sketch portraits far and above the ones in this article. He would then drill a hole in the back, empty out the excess graphite then spray fixative into it. People were paying him $300.00 a portrait in some bar somewhere in New Mexico. I saw a feature article about him in the Wall Street Journal many years after college. It said he just sat in the back of a bar or coffee house and people would come from all over to be immortalized in an etch-a-sketch. Brilliant hippie entrepreneur!
