Late this afternoon, I walked in the glorious sunshine to the library to pick up a book I’ve been waiting for, with a compact title, but a delightfully discursive subtitle, “The Mathematical Magpie: Being more stories, mainly transcendental, plus subsets of essays, rhymes, music, anecdotes, epigrams, and other prime oddments and diversions, rational or irrational, all derived from the infinite domain of mathematics,” edited by Clifton Fadiman. Along the way, I heard the whistle of a train and the churning diesels of the locomotive, so I detoured to the trestle in town, and standing beneath it, looked up to watch the train go by overhead. It dawned on me that, when left to my own devices, I am at heart still just a happy little boy.
