Late throwback... Heres a video (or to be more technically accurate, a machinima) showing a 3D model of Itokawa asteroid that I created using 3D Studio MAX (and imported into that virtual environment), when I used to work for Avatrian LLC, in Cebu City, back in 2010. I also created the ship and ship interior--looks like the Rangers (Interstellar spaceship) cockpit doesnt it--and the astronauts. The asteroid is not made of just one mesh--its one large mesh that serves as the base model for the asteroids dimensions, and 158 smaller rock meshes that I distributed around it to provide the sharp, rocky terrain effect that you see in the video. This was all shot in the OpenSimulator virtual environment. OpenSim is okay, but the physics is horrendous. Nonetheless, for fast prototyping, I do recommend it because its totally free. However, one day Id like to redo this entire scene using mods for ArmA III, Orbiter, or even Kerbal Space Program. I also did part the video postwork. https://youtube/watch?v=lno9MVXqa0E I was actually thinking about Rosetta and 67P, as well as the Hayabusa 2 asteroid rendezvous and landing missions, when I did this 3D asteroid model, three years before the actual comet rendezvous. This is why I remembered it recently.
