Lately, I’ve been having some problems. People often ask me why I care so much about the Palestinian cause. How can you care about those issues, but not about India, Pakistan, Africa, Burma, (etc.) or even your own people in Chicago, you’re not even Palestinian!? To which I respond, why do you not? Since when did distinguishing between right and wrong become a matter of nationality? Of course, none of these situations are more important than the other, they are all tragic in their own way. Just because I choose to speak out against a particular one, does not mean I do not care about the other issues. That is an ignorant statement; a statement that discloses the condition of your own heart. If you don’t, or can’t, feel something for copious amounts of people essentially being annihilated by another group of people, then maybe you should re-evaluate your heart. Which brings me to another problem. We, as people of this world, and taxpayers to the US, need to be cognizant about how things are being said and how the issues are being portrayed. The issues occurring in Palestine can not be deemed a war. A war is something that is two sided, where each side has a military and the means to defend itself. Saying that the issue in Palestine is a war is like saying that an otherwise unarmed neighbor used a slingshot to toss a rock into the neighbors yard; nobody was harmed, the rock was seen coming and was deflected. Had it hit, it would have caused a crack in the glass at most. But now the neighbor feels its only right to throw a pack of US funded dynamite into their slingshot having neighbor’s living room. Ha! That’ll teach them a lesson. That isn’t a war. If by any stretch you still believe it is, it definitely isn’t a fair one. If you aren’t bothered by all the children being killed, homes being blown up, and people being gassed, you should be concerned that obscene amounts of your tax money is going towards doing these unimaginable things. Just some food for thought. “If you are not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” - Malcolm X.
