Lately ive been seeing a lot of my friends audition for the music - TopicsExpress

Lately ive been seeing a lot of my friends audition for the music television show Idol which is great! I really support their courage and self-esteem to really present themselves in front of millions of viewers and especially singing in front of a panel of judges that have made a significant impact in the music industry. I do, however, have a problem... My problem is that this kills creativeness. It kills creativeness because it focuses on the outer image of what an artist is supposed to be. They are telling these people/artists that they have a textbook answer on how to make it as a singer or a performer or whatever and VOILA, youre a famous singer. Although i know my friends and the rest of the people are all sincere in their music and i know 90 percent of the contestants are most likely serious about music, i am sorry to have to say you are ripping your own soul out. You are letting 4 judges base you upon ONE performance and letting THEM try to figure out what suits YOU best. I am writing this because i feel it is my DUTY to tell you what exactly you are missing out on. You are missing out on the laughter from all the silly and funny songs you wouldve never made, the ones that are about what kind of shame and uncontrollable emotion you had when your mom caught you masturbating because you forgot to lock the door to your own room. You are missing out on the sadness that went into that one line about your grandma whom you yelled at for not letting you stay out late, when your mom was away, not knowing she would be gone 2 days later. You are missing out on the FANTASTIC REVELATION where you FINALLY experience who YOU are going to be for the rest of your days THROUGH music. You are submitting yourselves in a system which intentionally skips all that because for them, its most important what you do in front of them and in front of all those viewers that so nerve-rackingly watching you from their TV sets. Well i got news for you kings and queens. THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED. The next YOU will never be seen. Can you honestly tell me that if Bob Dylan wasnt famous and you first saw him on Idol, he would go through to the next round? Did you know Martin Luther King Jr. got a C in public speakings and was advised to try out sports? What if Einstein really had believed his teachers when they called him retarded. You are missing out on the obstacles you need to overcome to become that ROCK OF GIBRALTAR that you are. You are taking the short cut through a magical journey that is both wonderful and sad, heartbreaking and frustrating. You are sacrificing your UNIQUE talent for misconceived reality. My only fear is that you will actually believe what the judges say once you are eliminated and not believe in yourself as much like you did before all the way up until that first audition. This is YOUR life and it brings me such joy to see that you are willing to share it with the world so im telling you this. Be yourself and be that inner you that is waiting to explode onto the world. Whatever your passion may be, wether it be singing, performing, lyrics, instruments. DO YOU and i will know EXACTLY wether its real or not. You may not see my point yet because of all the excitement and thats cool, but when you get to that point when you have to determine who YOU are and how you want people to see YOU, ill be right here, waiting to hear it with uncontrollable excitement! Ahh music.. what a tangled web we weave.
