Latest Forecast from National Weather Service Blacksburg Light snow or a light wintry mix is forecast to arrive in the northwest North Carolina mountains and far southwest Virginia early Saturday morning and expand north and east during the day. Most areas east of the Blue ridge will see the precipitation fall as rain or perhaps a sleet/rain mix. Confidence is growing that this will be a light event, with minimal impacts as this will be arriving mainly during the late morning and afternoon when temperatures will be above freezing in most areas. The greatest snowfall/wintry mix accumulation still appears to be in NW North Carolina and far southwest Virginia (1-3) with light accumulations elsewhere from the Alleghany Highlands and Greenbrier Valley through portions of the southern Shenandoah Valley into the New River Valley. The light wintry mix will end Saturday evening. There are a couple of systems we are also monitoring that may impact our area. The first is on Monday. There are several uncertainties with this system, including temperatures, timing, and precipitation amounts. But, there is a potential for a wintry mix especially in the mountains. A potentially more potent system may impact our area Wednesday and Thursday (Christmas Day) with rain in advance of the system, and strong winds and mountain snow possible behind the system on Thursday (Christmas Day). Details about these system, including potential timing, are found in our latest multimedia briefing found here: youtu.be/DUJH1emP8-I Please note that it may take several minutes from the time that we post a YouTube video to the time that it can be viewed on the YouTube site. In addition, the initial YouTube posting is often quite fuzzy until all post-processing is complete (this can take an additional 30 minutes from the time that a video is becomes available).
