Latest Solar News and Updates Strong Geomagnetic Storm in Progress 06/29/2013 by Kevin VE3EN @ 06:00 UTC ZeroFive is located in the United States and specializes in multi-band vertical antennas and much more. Updated 06/29/2013 @ 06:00 UTC Strong Geomagnetic Storm in Progress The onset of a solar wind stream flowing from a Coronal Hole coupled with the aftermath of a weak CME impact has triggered a long lasting geomagnetic storm. The Bz/IMF component has been tipped sharply south (-11 nT) for hours on end and this is helping to intensify geomagnetic activity at high latitudes. The 6m (50mhz) ham radio band remains very active with signals across Scandinavia, Canada, northern parts of the USA and also Alaska. A Strong Geomagnetic Storm (Kp=7) is currently in progress. ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 7 Threshold Reached: 2013 Jun 29 0559 UTC Synoptic Period: 0300-0600 UTC Active Warning: Yes NOAA Scale: G3 - Strong Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude. Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices. Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur. Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur. Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent. Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.
