Latest Update from Kyle Wiese on Townes the Mighty Warrior(AKA my nephew) : Tonight was a good night to be a new parent. Amanda and I both go to lay our hands on Townes and do containment, which is basically laying your hands over his head and body with light pressure to simulate the warmth and resistance of the walls of the womb. It was pretty amazing to see the response, which was slightly uncertain/anxious at first, then adjustment and comfort after he had a chance to adapt. The surreal feeling of having his tiny arms wriggle around under your hands to get as much surface contact with your warmth was astounding. The idea that this little guy was swimming around free and easy inside Amandas abdomen only 8 days ago just floors me, and I am so proud of him to put up such an effort on his end to keep progressing and growing in a situation where he is forced to struggle and survive each day with new challenges. Amanda is doing well and is walking around at a pace that astounds most of the nurses and doctors she interacts with. THey simply dont see many women who have an emergency c-section and then are up and walking, unassisted less than a week removed from major surgery. She gets a lot of admiration from the nurses who have had their own kids as well, as they know how hard it is to commit to doing what is best for your body… especially when it hurts like hell. Townes is on a schedule to have his next brain scan Friday morning, and to potentially have his arterial line removed in the coming days as well. The removal of the arterial line is great because it will allow him the ability to sleep on his stomach (considered safe and comfortable for preemies who are being monitored in the NICU) as well as to be held by Amanda and I to get him used to the contact/smell/heat of another human body. We cant wait. I go back to work tomorrow (now today) and I am lucky that I think my boss is going to be understanding and help me work out a schedule that allows me to spend some afternoons working from the lobby of the NICU so that I can be near Townes and Amanda, especially when tests or procedures are being run, or when results have been reviewed by his specialists. We are both lucky to have workplaces and employers that seem to truly care about our situation and family. Team Townes wristbands are being distributed as quickly as possible, and we are awaiting the Team Townes cards with his support info on them to send out some of the long distance packages as well. These will hopefully go out this week. Thanks again to everyone, and get those Team Townes pictures up. He loves all of his supporters. We all do. -Team Townes (T/A/K)
