Latest news report on the work Soldiers off the Street do!!! Over the past couple of weeks it has been noticed that some people feel the need to abuse other members over some of their comments. A number of people have been banned. Soldiers Off The Street is a Charity that aims to provide the help and assistance required to former service personnel who for whatever reason find them selves homeless. We are a non Political, Radical, Racial or Religious organisation and will not tolerate the actions of keyboard warriors who do not support our UK Armed Forces. At the end of October we had a message from a former ex serviceman who had seen a story in his local newspaper about a lad ex 9 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps, who, after being medically discharged found himself living in his car. We are happy to report that the lad collected the keys to his new flat at the weekend and a delivery of white goods will be with him this week. After reading the attached newspaper article we are sure that some members of the group will be pretty angry at the way this lad has been treated. Can we therefore ask that bad language is not used in any replies. mynewtown.co.uk/newsviewer/tabid/1387/ArticleId/5676/Ex-soldier-left-sleeping-in-car-and-on-friends-couches.aspx Last week in Northumberland the deposit was paid on another property for a guy who had served 11 years with the Royal Artillery. After getting the guy off the street a few months ago temp accommodation was provided via Changing Lives in Blyth. All the furniture and white goods are being delivered this week following the house being re decorated. Tomorrow a computer is being delivered to one of our new cases so he can access video conference calling with a PTSD Counsellor. This lad served in Afghanistan and since leaving in 2008 has had no assessments or assistance with his combat related issues. He currently has a one bed flat provided by Changing Lives on a supported living basis in Newcastle. We also have another guy we are working with at one of Changing Lives Locations in another part of Newcastle. The guy served with The Royal Hussars and suffered extensive injuries prior to being medically discharged a number of years ago. Another case we are currently dealing with involves a guy who served with the Royal Corps of Transport. The lad suffers from PTSD and takes some serious medication. After being diagnosed with PTSD 2 years ago he found himself on ESA. He then ended up being placed onto a work programme without the correct ATOS assessment being completed. Last month the lad was sanctioned and after attending a meeting with the lad we found it hard to believe that the attitude of the individual who had sanctioned him. She thinks she does not have to know about safeguarding issues and does not have to carry out risk assessments. Why? Because they have a contract with the DWP and they should do all of that. She also does not seem to think that she needs to know anything about the lads condition, and when asked if she would know what to do if he was having a flashback or meltdown whilst in their offices what would she do. Again she seems to think that is not relevant to them as a service provider to the DWP. The second meeting that took place was recorded and we will now be seeking legal advice on the grounds of Disability Discrimination and issues under the Equality Act. More to follow on this one. Last Monday evening the North East Team were down in North Yorkshire searching for an ex military lad who is currently living in a tent at the bottom of a grave yard. After meeting up with the lad he informed us he has been homeless for about 14 years and after all the let downs and promises of help in the past he is not interested in obtaining help to gain accommodation. So we will continue to make sure he has what he needs to stay safe and warm and hopefully we can change his mind and help him further. Today in the North East two lads one ex RLC and a ex Welsh Guards were re housed in a flat of their own and white goods and beds ect will be delivered for them on Wednesday, Lastly a ex Royal Signals lad and his family down in Wiltshire will have their deposit paid so they will have a home of their own!!!
