According to NOAAs Climate Prediction Center, there is a 65% chance that we will see El Niño conditions this winter, lasting into the spring. Climate scientists look at Equatorial Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) to determine the oceanic component of ENSO, and they focus on region Niño 3.4. El Niño is characterized by a five consecutive 3-month running mean of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Niño 3.4 region that is above the threshold of +0.5°C. This standard of measure is known as the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI).
