Latest report on the Mega Block of Lumding-Silchar Gauge Conversion project HAFLONG, Dec 2 – The Mega Block of Lumding-Silchar Gauge Conversion project commenced on October 1, 2014 for a period of six months. The progress of various activities to be undertaken during the Mega Block such as dismantling of Meter Gauge track, earthwork, track linking , ballasting and packing of track is satisfactory. As a result of the satisfactory progress achieved so far, the following milestones have been achieved stated a press release issued by DC Borah, Sr PRO/Construction on Monday. The release stated that (i) Motor Trolley inspection from km 0 to km 78 was completed on November 27. (ii) Push Trolley inspection from km 145 to Badarpur to Silchar was achieved on December 1. (iii) First BG locomotive on the section was run from km 0 to km 26 on November 6. (iv) Till date about 10 ballast rakes from Patharkhola and Pakur have been sent into the section for unloading of ballast in the section. (v) Duomatic machine for packing of track has been introduced from December 1. This machine will improve the geometry of the track making it fit for passenger and goods operation. However some misguided elements in the public attempted to stop the BG conversion work on November 30 in order to press the Railway for payment of compensation for land used for BG conversion. As the matter is already inconsideration of Gauhati High Court, no decision can be taken on a matter which is subjudice, the release stated. A meeting was conducted with the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao in which this aspect was highlighted with a request from the Railways to the civil administration to prevent such instances of work stoppages in the future as they are detrimental to the progress of work which has to be completed by March 31, 2015.
