Latest update from Kati Giblin from Beijing! (PS Har Gow is my favorite food) June 16, 2013 We sign the language pledge today, which means we can only speak Chinese from now on. We’re all so nervous! I have a feeling it’ll get easier as we go along, though. I did my first homework last night. It took two and a half hours, and that was just the minimum amount of work of learning the new vocab and grammar, and doing the worksheets! I didn’t even do any extra studying because it was so late. Yesterday we went on a scavenger hunt around Beijing with the help of our Chinese roommates. We went to the Lama Temple, the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, and this amazing restaurant. Chinese food in China is officially 600,000 times better than Chinese food in America. The flavors are just stronger and more balanced. Har Gow actually tasted sweet, like a little more than just shrimp and rice flour. At the end of the night, we even got Chinese fast food. Even in America, it would have been considered pretty good Chinese food. There was a photo contest for the scavenger hunt. We didn’t go to every location, but I think we fared better than other groups. One group only went to one spot because a member had his backpack stolen at the subway station when he set it down without watching! Fortunately, it only had tissues and a pen inside.
