Latest update from Nancy. Jan 24, 2014 Home! We are home! Jon had his last radiation treatment yesterday afternoon, then we packed up and headed home. He is past the first big hurdle in his treatment. Its been a long six weeks but we have been thankful Jon has tolerated his treatments so well. It was made so much easier by our being able to stay at the American Cancer Societys Hope Lodge. Because we live more than fifty miles away we were allowed to stay at no cost for Jons entire treatment period. We were welcomed by staff and other residents alike and we made some lovely friends while we were there. It was comfortable and close enough that Jon had somewhere to go to rest between appointments, and we are also so grateful we didnt have to fight traffic to and from St Louis each day. We actually stopped on our way home to help Jons friend, Todd, get the games for the auction sorted and weighed. The auction ended Wednesday evening and was an amazing success. Jon saw his medical oncologist on Wednesday. They were pleased that he had done so well through his treatment and that his lab results remain relatively normal. We found out that the testing on the tumor to determine if it was a specific mutation was not yet ready. This study will determine if he can go further in one of the clinical trials he has been offered but will be finished in a few days. Our next appointment is in two weeks when we should learn more clearly what Jons treatment plan will be from here. He will have an MRI and lab work before he sees the Dr that day. The results of these will dictate whether he will be eligible for either of the clinical vaccine trials. We have a lot of hope that these vaccines could retard the regrowth of the tumor for a long period of time. We ask for continued prayer that his MRI is clear to enable him to participate in one or both of these research projects. If you wish to read more about these trials go to clinicaltrials.gov Search for: DCVax-L for Newly Diagnosed GBM Brain Cancer and Rindopepimut in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma In the meantime, he has two free weeks with no chemo, treatments, labs or appointments. He is still pretty exhausted most of the time but this should lessen with time. We are very thankful for the love and support, and for everyone who has kept us in their thoughts and prayers.
