Latest upload on our #Vimeo channel #artworkshopwithpaul - Part 2 [Series 1] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Soft Pastels with Paul Taggart PART 2 – Having established the dark under-painting layers, used to form the frame of the composition and provide the base on which to build layers from dark through to the super highlights; you now join Paul Taggart moving on to the first of several layers to establish the base colours of the SILK FABRIC. Watch as the folds of the lustrous silk fabric start to form, draping languidly through the background and foreground of the composition – most importantly the way in which they are reflected through the translucent and opaque glass scent bottles. This is a process that cannot be hurried – for it is only through the gradual build-up of layers that the various tonal properties of the fabric will come to life. Applying the pure pigment to the surface is followed by judicious blending – the former seemingly harsh and crude; becoming painterly, once blended. Following this Paul switches to the FRONT PIECE OF CLEAR GLASS, with its deepest of ink-blue centre – slowly building it up through patient application of pastel colours, with blending used to great painterly effect. Switching next to the OPALESCENT SCENT BOTTLE, with its clear stopper and twisted trails of knotted glass; this is given its first layer of pastel and blended – establishing the first hints of its sparkling iridescent glow. Watch as surface colour mixing is exploited to its fullest – when intense lustrous colours are applied and then blended into the base colours to effect the subtlest of coloured greys and browns. Like the lustrous properties of the silk background, the various tonal properties of these glass objects rely on this unhurried process of gradually building-up layers. YOU WILL LEARN MUCH about light, about colours, about texture, about strokes, not to mention many, many more tips and hints – explained in detail through Paul’s running commentary. Which means you will learn much from this lesson alone, not to mention the other four that make up this boxed-set. Soft Pastels are a medium that perplex many, resulting in this purest of pigmented mediums to be often overlooked in favour of working with wet paints. Yet the layering technique of working from dark-to-light; as demonstrated in this painting project by Paul Taggart, has been adapted from the traditional technique that Paul uses in his oil paintings. This start-to-finish still-life painting project is equally useful for oil painters and/or those wishing to work in acrylics. SUBJECT - amongst the most frequently requested subjects is the plea for help with painting glass objects and fabrics; which is where this still-life comes into its own. In his quest to convey the excitement and richness of painting with soft pastels, this author of fourteen books chooses to produce a still-life using hand-made scent bottles and the most luxurious and sensuous of fabrics – silk. TECHNIQUE - Paul Taggart describes the work he does with Soft Pastels, as ‘painting’ – the difference simply being that rather than producing ‘wet’ strokes, he can effectively mimic the effects of painting, such as brush-strokes, scuffs, scumbles, surface colour-mixing, blending and layering with ‘dry’ strokes. Follow Pauls detailed demonstration and you will appreciate how Pauls enthusiasm for his craft comes through as he delights in sharing his knowledge - borne from the experience of a professional artist with over forty years standing. vimeo/ondemand/artworkshopwithpaulpast1/103159642
