Laundries close as deadline nears Several laundries have had to close shop here recently because illegal foreign workers have not turned up for work or left the Kingdom under the amnesty ending on Nov. 3. A few have stayed open to allow customers to fetch their clothing. With fewer workers, laundries are also taking up to 24 hours to clean and press customers’ clothing, compared to six to eight hours previously. This has happened since Eid Al-Adha. Fehaid Abu Ali, a laundry owner, said he would have to close his business, which is going to cost him a great deal of money. “The laundry supports my family. I had eight workers and we would complete about 50 orders a day.” He had to delay completing orders because of a lack of staff. “Now I can’t find other workers to run the laundry and I can’t pay the rent while it is closed.” Many people here are disappointed that the laundries are going to close down. Sami Ahmed, an unmarried soldier, who is posted here away from his family, said he would find it difficult to cope without a laundry. “I’ve been a regular customer and I pay on credit because they know me. Now I have to find another shop.”
