Laura Ingram IV asked me to choose ten books that have had a lasting effect on my life and outlook. Here we have them, in no particular order. When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead was one of my seventh grade summer reading books. Its probably one of my favorite books of all time, about a latchkey kid in New York during the 1970s. If you havent read it, I dont want to give it away, but I highly recommend it. The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien helps me to keep my imagination. (Im calling it one book.) Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor was another required reading book Im pretty sure. I think it was fourth grade? It was the winner of the 1977 Newbery Medal and is told from the view of a young black girl in Mississippi. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is the story of how young peoples actions and words affect each other. It is told after a girls suicide, through tapes. Princess Academy by Shannon Hale is one a reread every once in a while. A young girl finds her calling, basically. I super suck at summaries, sorry. Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliet is probably technically a childrens novel but I really love it. Its a mystery novel I think I picked up sometime during elementary school. It first got me interested in art. The Mysterious Benedict Society (and the sequels) by Trenton Lee Stewart taught me that while we can do things alone, we also have friends there who can help us, and that every part of a group is important. The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch helped me in middle school. It made me feel like I was valid and that I could have a positive affect on the world even though I was (am) young. Its also a mystery series. Life of Pi by Yann Martel (which I know a lot of people who read it for summer reading 2k13 hated) made me cherish the things I hold high, the people I respect, and the things I believe. If you believe it, it is real to you. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a classic for a reason. I actually had to read it twice before I liked/appreciated it. It deals with coming of age and seeing the horrors in the world, and how different people deal with them (at least for me?). These arent necessarily my favorite books, but they are some of the ones that have impacted me, especially in 4th-7th grades which is when i read most of these. I guess I ask the same of Legh, Sharis, Andrew, Kwana, Sam, Candy, Dominique, Chase, and Haley. idk how many people im supposed to tag in this tbh and you dont have to do it.
