Laura Poglianos daughter, Leah, coined the term Treatment Before Tragedy which the founding members embraced when the organization launched this passed year to support families like Lauras, Leahs and mine. I am proud to be a founding member with Laura, Leah and all who came together following the Newtown Tragedy to create solutions to our broken mental health system. That work is vital to all who believe that all deserve to live in a healthy and safe society. This week we experienced tragedy after treatment. Treatment doesnt always promise a happy ending or a long life. It just promises hope. We all had such high hopes for Zac. His light was so bright. His light will never die. This week I felt the cost of caring….it is a price worth paying. People do care when we let them into our world. Zac, Laura and Leah let us all go behind their front door to feel their helplessness, their healing and their hopes. This gift of humanity and love goes beyond our small world of families and advocates. It touched the public at large. It touched the collective heart of our country. Zac will never die in our minds, our hearts our spirits. He is forever young, forever brave, and forever free. “I carry your heart, I carry it in my heart.” Thank you for sharing his heart with me.
