Lauras Law was approved today by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. This has been a controversial issue and many mental health advocates have been in support of Lauras Law. Mark-Anthony Johnson spoke on the issue this morning--representing DPNs Building Resilience project--because we have serious concerns about the law and its impacts on communities of color. The ACLU, Disability Rights California, The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law and Mental Health America also oppose Lauras Law. The LA Times covered the story: Others, such as Mark-Anthony Johnson of local advocacy group Dignity and Power Now, cautioned the supervisors that the move could further criminalize those with mental illness. Johnson said Lauras Law plays into the fear that folks with mental health conditions are violent people. And he expressed concerns that people of color would be disproportionately targeted for court-ordered treatment. latimes/local/lanow/la-me-ln-los-angeles-county-lauras-law-20140715-story.html
