Lavrov calls vital inclusion of approval of Geneva communique in resolution on Syria Moscow is glad that the new UN Security Council resolution on Syria contains the approval of the June 30, 2012 communique despite initial resistance from Western states. "It is vital that the official approval of the June 30, 2012 Geneva communique containing the plan of a peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict was finally included in this resolution," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Kommersant daily published on Monday. "Previously our Western colleagues did not want to do that without interpreting the communique, as they put it," Lavrov said. "By interpreting they meant pegging the communique to Chapter 7 [of the UN Security Council, which implies the use of force]," Lavrov noted. Besides, in the course of the talks between Russia and the United States on the Syrian issue "our American partners - why should we conceal it? - tried to rework the situation and return it to Chapter 7," the minister said. "Some more time had to be spent on talks. As a result I am satisfied that we remained true to the understandings reached at Geneva, which are of key importance," Lavrov said. "So the result, I believe, is generally positive. It does not reflect any changes in approaches to the Syrian crisis - there are no threats of any intimidating armed actions approved by the Security Council. Everything remains in the political sphere," he concluded.
