Laws Mennonite Church was severely vandalized, then items were piled into Audreys corner and lit. There is a lot of damage from the vandalism, and then lots of smoke and water damage. The roof is intact, though, for which we give grateful praise, but there is a LOT of work to be done. We are waiting on the fire marshall, the insurance company and all the powers that be. Someone (or several someones) broke the lock box going into the basement door, went into the basement, went through the cupboards, pulling stuff out, then went through the entire church, vandalizing and making a pile of stuff in the corner of the auditorium, where they then lit the fire. They may have been looking for money -- which we never keep at the church since several breakins back some time ago. There was a passerby who saw the flames through the window and called 911. THANK GOD!!! I am so, so sad, but so grateful that it wasnt negligence on the part of any of us -- no hot pot left on, no candle forgotten, or oven neglected from our carry-in on Sunday. That would be a terrible burden for one of us to have to bear. The church family at Laws is resilient and tight. We are hurt (again!) but we really do like each other as well as love each other and we will pull together and ask God to show us what we should do.
