~Lead Me to the Rock~ In Psalm 61 adversity caused the psalmist to become weary of life and to faint. Like us, he hoped to find divine protection from his adversity. Yet at times like this, God seems so far away. Nevertheless, the psalmist called out to God-- as we often do-- because of Gods promises and past record(v.3). He had been there for him in the past and he expected no less now. In spite of the psalmists knowledge of Gods past performance in delivering him from adversity, perhaps he still had questions. For example, Will he do it again? Or, Does my past conduct warrant him delivering me again? Or perhaps, How long will I have to wait? At the close of this psalm the writer expressed confidence in the protecting hand of the Lord and proclaimed that he will sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows (v.8). Like the psalmist, we often long to dwell in a place of complete safety. We too want to live in constant fellowship with God. Like Peter, we want to build tabernacles high above the suffering and helplessness that exist in the valley. yet it is our Lord who leads us down the mountain to the valley. He is up to the task.
