Lead-off batter Kingsley Avery scored both runs, as the Junior White Sox opened their ISF World Junior Women’s Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 extra-inning win over Puerta Rico at Brampton, Canada. Avery put the young Kiwis ahead in the very first inning, when she was walked and eventually brought home by pitcher Taylor-Paige Stewart. The Puerta Ricans tied the game up in the sixth inning – a fielding error allowed centrefielder Courtney Adams to reach base and a triple from Aleisha Ocasio scored the run. Avery began the eighth inning as the tiebreak runner on second base and came home for the winner on a wild pitch. Stewart was then able to hold Puerta Rico scoreless for the victory. Stewart, the University of Wisconsin Badger, finished with three strikeouts and no earned runs, while third base Kuraroa Ratu-James led the batting with two hits from four appearances at the plate. Earlier in the day, Puerta Rico had defeated the Czech Republic 8-0 in five inngins, while elsewhere in the Kiwis’ pool, the champion United States stomped on Great Britain 10-0 in four innings and the absent Venezuela forfeited against hosts Canada. New Zealand take on the British at 2am (NZT) tomorrow.
