Leaders/Warriors, History 15 thru 17 November!!! 15 NOV 2 ID On 15 NOV 1950, patrols of the 23rd Infantry Regiment reported contact with civilian refugees who had reported Chinese withdrawals. These reports led to the belief that the Chinese threat was not a great as initially believed and were the cause of further preparation for offensive operations to the Yalu River. US Army On 15 NOV 1864, Union MG William T. Shermans Army prepares to leave Atlanta, GA. This was the final action before the beginning the MG Shermans infamous March to the Sea. 16 NOV 2 ID On 16 NOV 1950, the 2nd Reconnaissance Company of the reported an element of approximately 200 enemy, possible Chinese Communist Forces, southeast of the town of Songchon. This report placed enemy forces far to the rear of the Division Headquarters located in the vicinity of Sunchon. US Army On 16 NOV 1863, MG Ambrose Burnsides Army of the Ohio retires to Knoxville, TN. This action commences the Siege of Knoxville. Burnsides control of the city of Knoxville and with it the railroad, cut the link of the Confederacy from the West to the East. LTG James Longstreet and his Corps were detached from Gen. Braxton Braggs Army of Tennessee at Chattanooga to prevent The Army of the Ohio from being reinforced. This action fixed Longstreet at Knoxville and prevented his participation against the Union main effort at Chattanooga. 17 NOV 2 ID On 17 NOV 1950, the 2nd Reconnaissance Company was the only 2 ID element to report contact with the enemy. It killed two, captured one and dispersed 10 more in a running gun fight in the vicinity of Songchon. The 2nd Reconnaissance Company suffered no casualties in this action and confirmed the presence of Chinese Communist Forces south of the 2 ID headquarters in Sunchon. US Army On 17 NOV 1965, the North Vietnamese Army conducted a follow-up surprise attack of the 14 November action. This attack came against the marching column of 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) near LZ Albany. This ambush was the deadliest attack of a U.S. unit during the course of the entire war. About half of some 300 American Soldiers killed in action during the 35-day Operation Silver Bayonet in the Ia Drang Valley occured in this one 16 hour long fight. It was because of this action that the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Cavalry Regiment will be organized as an infantry battalion and not a reconnassance squadron. STN, William M.
