Leadership Tip #101: Employee motivation is up to the employee. A leaders job is not to motivate an employee - not only is that exhausting and unsustainable but it can often backfire with short-term gain and long-term damage. Instead, leaders need to create an environment that provides their employees with a sense of belonging, purpose, progress, authenticity, and autonomy. When the conditions are right, employees are internally motivated; they flourish; performance and productivity improve; knowledge, that otherwise wouldnt be, is leveraged and shared; creativity goes through the roof; and organizational loyalty increases. So... what can you start doing today to help create a sense a belonging, purpose, progress, authenticity, and autonomy in your teams?
