Leading tech journalist Jennifer Baker is joined by Pirate Party MEP Julia Reda — the rapporteur for the European Parliament’s review of the EU’s current copyright law (InfoSoc Directive) — to discuss what could be improved in the EU’s copyright legislation. On Monday 19 January, Reda released a draft report making a series of recommendations for the improvement of EU copyright laws. The current InfoSoc Directive was drafted in 2001 and does not fit the current digital landscape anymore, underlines the Pirate MEP. Moreover, the directive failed to establish harmonised copyright legislation across the European Union, which results in legal uncertainty for individuals and companies, she adds. Copyright reform should be aimed at setting European copyright regulation in stead of a directive. Finally, new legislation should also be more simple, so that “people can understand it”.
