Leah emailed me explaining her awful Monday, that put her to the verge of a breakdown. She was asking how I maintain what she describes as a sunny disposition. Ive decided to answer here because I know there are many more Leahs out there. First and foremost; accept that you cant change things that have already happened, you can only choose how you are going to deal with them. Once something has happened: its happened. If its something that makes you unhappy, vow to work toward a different outcome next time. Your kid missed the bus. Okay. The bus is gone, and no amount of yelling, being upset or losing your cool is bringing that bus back. You have to simply move on from that missed bus moment and decide what comes next. I know my son needs extra time (hence the 4:30 am alarm, and we still missed the bus!!) and extra prodding/guidance/reminding to get out the door on time. It does totally frustrate me when we derail and the well oiled morning machine ends up in a ditch. I need to take a moment to regroup, and then continue. And then I walk him into the school, give him a gentle shove toward staff and say to them TAG! YOURE IT!
