Leah has had her hearing aids for 6 weeks. While she can hear - TopicsExpress

Leah has had her hearing aids for 6 weeks. While she can hear noises and responds to my voice calling her name, she can only hear me when there is not a lot of other background noise. What a blessing to watch her hear for the first time in her life. That was a true blessing and a day I will never forget. We knew hearing aids were not going to provide a lot of hearing for Leah but was told that for insurance purposes that we needed to give the hearing aids 3-6 months of trial time before pursuing cochlear implants. During this trial time, we have done a lot of research to support both the deaf culture as well as the hearing world. Nick and I both desire Leah to independently function in the hearing world and we both want to give her every opportunity to be independent. Cochlear implants seem like our best option but are not absolutely going to work for Leah. There are more tests that need to be done that will tell us what kind of hearing loss she has and better determine if she is a good candidate for implants. While we are hopeful for successful implantation, Gods will is perfect. Due to Leahs bilateral profound hearing loss, we now have the OK from our insurance to pursue cochlear implants! We have been researching different doctors and different locations for cochlear implants. We sure are blessed to have many GREAT options. Thanks to many new friends that I have spoken to about their knowledge and experience with cochlear implants, we are excited to begin a new path for Leahs hearing. This week, Leah has 2 doctor appointments to begin her journey to cochlear implants. Only God knows where this road is going to lead and we are faithfully taking the next step.
