Leaked documents from Nauru detention centre show the numbers of asylum seekers held in the offshore detention centre have almost tripled in the past year. The leaked documents detail the numbers of asylum seekers held in Nauru and their countries of origin, the gender breakdown of the asylum seeker population and the number of children currently detained. According to the documents, there are currently 1136 asylum seekers held at Australia’s offshore detention centre detained on Nauru. In February 2013 there were only 400 male asylum seekers at the Nauru detention centre. The screenshots show 647 men, 308 women, 73 underage boys and 108 underage girls seeking asylum are presently detained in the three compounds; RPC 2A, RPC 2B and RPC3. 181 of the detainees at Nauru are children; 73 boys and 108 girls under the age of 18. 519 of the asylum seekers at Nauru are of Iranian origin, the largest nationality represented within the detention centre’s population In January 2014 a discussion paper released by the Australian Human Rights Commission Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention noted there was 116 asylum seeker children detained on Nauru by the Australian Government under the Government’s third country processing regime. The number of children detained in Nauru appears to have again increased. The Human Rights Commission inquiry staff will not be traveling to Nauru to investigate the welfare of children held offshore “as the powers of the Commission in relation to inquiries cannot be exercised outside of Australia.” An IHMS report for ‘Offshore Processing Centres Quarterly Health Trends’ between October – December 2013 noted: intermittent upper respiratory tract infections over the period mainly in the children. The children have presented with general malaise and fever. The condition lasts for a period of 24-48 hours. The phosphate concentrations around the site have contributed to continued follow-up presentations for asthma. It is expected that exposure will continue whilst the population remains in tented facilities. The legally designated guardian for all unaccompanied minors held in immigration detention is the Australian Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison. In February 2013, Marianne Evers, a nurse working at the centre in Nauru likened the facility to “a concentration camp.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recommend Written by Asher Wolf Journalist.
