Leaking water heater replaced this weekend. Easiest plumbing job I - TopicsExpress

Leaking water heater replaced this weekend. Easiest plumbing job I ever had to do. Used Pex to replace the copper pipes. Badda bing badda boom, water heater replaced in a few hours. But what I didnt realize was that when I shut off the main water valve (had to replace the water heater shutoff valve also) the stem packing developed a leak that started out slow, but got much worse overnight. Found the water Sunday morning, half the basement totally soaked. I was able to tighten the packing nut to stop the leak but now have to deal with the soaking wet carpet. Tried to wet vac and dehumidify all day yesterday but this morning every thing is still soaked. So I pulled up the carpet in half the basement, and cut out the carpet underlayment (saturated.) Hopefully we can get rid of the moisture before it molds.
