Lean Construction Institute of Australia It was while developing of our Integrated Business System that Donnan began to look at the amount of repetition and ‘waste’ in data transfer between internal and external stakeholders. It became very apparent that despite best efforts to work collaboratively, old fashion vertical management structures with silo like environments stifled opportunities for true integration. The idea of working from a single platform and sharing data ‘horizontally’ was the catalyst to research alternate philosophies and where we found Lean Construction. Based on a manufacturing system developed by Toyota, Lean is a “way to design production systems to minimise waste of materials, time and effort in order to generate the maximum possible amount of value” (Koskela et al. 2002). Form IBS, our new online business platform is a collaboration tool to manage projects using the Lean principles and what will reduce costs and help create value for our clients. Donnan has recently become a member of the Lean Construction Institute of Australia, and will actively engage in the development and promotion of Lean as a new construction paradigm.
