Lean Practitioner Point for Discussion: During problem solving sessions participants are asked the question, are data sets and facts the same thing?. Generally the group members answer in a split between yes and no. After letting the group hold some discussion, I will interject the answer I believe to be true. Data is representative of something that has occurred, where as a fact is the real thing which has happened. Additionally, facts are to be observed while data is generally to be reported. The ultimate aim of the question, and pursuing discussion, is to drive home the importance of observing facts where the value added work is happening. Please feel free to add to the discussion!
