Leap of Faith Then take the ark of the Lord and set it on the cart; and put the articles of gold which you are returning to Him as a trespass offering in a chest by its side. Then send it away, and let it go. And watch: if it goes up the road to its own territory, to Beth Shemesh, then He has done us this great evil. But if not, then we shall know that it is not His hand that struck us—it happened to us by chance.” 1 Samuel 6:8-9 It was time for the Philistines to take a step of faith. They would send the cart out with the offering to the Lord. Then, they would wait to see which direction it would go. If it went to Israel, it was the Lord. If it did not go to the Lord’s people, then His hand was not in the plagues. Was it a leap of faith or where they testing God? They thought God had sent the plagues against them, but they were not sure, so they sent the cart out unmanned. They wanted to see if the Lord would direct the cart, and then they would know if He had plagued them. I think we like to test God, just like the heathen Philistines. We sometimes say we are stepping out in faith when we are really testing God. Testing and faith are different. When we step out in faith, we have been before the Lord. We have a peace and a prompting from Him, we believe the Lord is guiding. When we test God, we have no idea what we are doing, so we step off the ledge and say, “Okay, God, if you love me, save me.” We should not be like the heathens. We should seek the Lord in all things and follow His guidance. Do not leap until you have sought the Lord in prayer and in His Word. Pastor Raul Ries
