Learn Estate Division Ibn Masud (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Learn estate division and teach it to people, for I am someone who will be taken from you, and this knowledge will be taken from you and calamities will ensue, until two men will one day disagree about the obligatory apportionment and will not find anyone to judge between them.” [Hakim] Such ahadith are an encouragement to Muslims to master the knowledge of estate division prescribed by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). Estate division refers to the allotment of shares to each heir by Divine Law / Shariah. If this education is obtained with the intention of safeguarding the Shariah then it is undoubtedly a form of worship of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). There are always lots of people who study the law that is practiced in the courts of a country, as people make their living by filling the positions in the judiciary. But most Muslim majority countries nowadays have Anglo-Saxon law as the law of the state. This they inherited from their colonizers and they have not replaced with the laws from their own value system. Thus, British law or French law, in other words man-made law, is the basis of “justice” and not law given by the Most Just, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). In such times as these it becomes even more important for Muslims to take on the responsibility of protecting the Shariah by studying it and guiding others in its implementation.
