Learn Our History Today: On August 12, 1862, during the Civil War, Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate Cavalrymen attacked and captured a Union Garrison located in the town of Gallatin, Tennessee. The town was a crucial supply depot for the Union Army of General Don Carlo Buell, which was threatening the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Morgan’s raiders burned the depot, in addition to capturing the minuscule Union garrison guarding it. They then proceeded to destroy an 800 foot railroad tunnel north of Gallatin by setting aflame a train loaded with hay and then shoving it into the tunnel. The supports of the tunnel then proceeded to collapse, destroying the tunnel. The raid was a smashing success for Morgan who had severely disrupted the supply lines of an entire Union Army. Also, on August 12, 1969, during the Vietnam War, an offensive was launched by the North Vietnamese, with attacks being made on over 150 different cities and towns. The brunt of the attack focused on the area near the Cambodian border northwest of the city of Saigon, where 2,000 North Vietnamese attacked the towns of Tay Ninh, An Loc, Loc Ninh, and Quan Loi. In addition, North Vietnamese Commandos attacked the Headquarters of the U.S. 1st Marine Division. The Commandos killed and wounded over 28 marines, but were eventually driven out after suffering 40 men killed.
