Learn Our History Today: On August 8, 1974, President Richard M. Nixon announced his intention to resign as President of the United States. He was the first president ever to take such an action. The act of resigning from his position as president was Nixon’s way of finally bowing to pressure from the public and from Congress stemming from Nixon’s involvement in the famous Watergate Scandal. In the scandal, five men including Nixon’s campaign security coordinator broke into Democratic National Committee headquarters with the objective of placing wire taps. Soon a higher echelon conspiracy was uncovered and the entire thing became a scandal of the utmost magnitude. On August 8, in a nationally televised evening address, he said, by taking this action, I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America.
