Learn Our History Today: On December 28, 1856, American President Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia. As a young man, Woodrow Wilson attended private schools, and eventually made it to Princeton University where he graduated in 1879. Wilson would eventually go back to Princeton in 1899, this time as a political science professor, and he would later work his way up to becoming the institution’s president in 1902. His tenure there would prove to be highly successful, with Wilson going to great lengths to revitalize the teaching program and elevate Princeton to a level of prestige that it continues to have to this day. Quickly, his extremely effective management of Princeton came to the attention of leaders within the Democratic Party and they persuaded him to run for governor of New Jersey, an election which he won, serving for two years. Soon his name was in the national spotlight, and he was persuaded to set his sights even higher, the Presidency. In 1912, in a highly contested election, Wilson emerged victorious. During his time as Commander-in-Chief, Wilson would see the country to an international stage, leading the U.S. through World War I and pushing hard for American involvement in the League of Nations, which was his brain child. In the end, Congress would reject the league, believing that it undermined American sovereignty and preferring to keep a more isolationist stance. Despite Congress’ rejection, Woodrow Wilson continued to campaign in the league’s favor, going on nationwide tours to gain support. It would be on one of these arduous tours that Wilson would suffer a stroke, after which he finished out his time as President and retired from public life, dying in February 1924.
