Learn Our History Today: On June 2, during Pontiac’s Rebellion, Indians took control of Fort Michilimackinac near present day Mackinac City, Michigan. On June 2, 1763, a group of Chippewa Indians began to play a game of Baaga’adowe (an early version of lacrosse) right outside the walls of Fort Michilimackinac. Oddly, the British soldiers stationed at the fort weren’t suspicious at all, and the game easily distracted them. Then at one point during the game the ball “accidentally” rolled into the fort, and as the gate was opened to retrieve the ball, the Indians rushed in. The Chippewas then ran through the fort and butchered a great majority of the very unlucky British who were inside. Following this disturbing episode, the Indians remained in control of the fort until 1764, when the British retook it as Pontiac’s rebellion wound to a close. In Addition, on June 2, 1886, President Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsom in the Blue Room of the White House. He was, and still remains, the only president ever to be married in the White house and only the second president to marry while in office. Also, President Cleveland’s bride, Frances Folsom, at twenty-one years old, was the youngest First lady in U.S. history and the public at the time soon came to admire her warm personality and striking beauty.
