Learn Our History Today: On September 25, 1775, during the American Revolution, Ethan Allen and a small force of militia attempted to take the British controlled city of Montreal. Allen was a rising star in the Continental army, who after his great and famous taking of Fort Ticonderoga without firing a shot, was thirsty for more glory. During the American invasion of Canada in late 1775, he along with Major John Brown put a plan together to take the city of Montreal from the British. Things went wrong for Allen from the get go. Major Brown was supposed to support Allen in the attack, but for some reason, at the planned time of attack, he and his men were no were to be found. The commander of the British at Montreal, Guy Carleton, then discovered Allen and his measly force of less than 100 men waiting outside the city gates and sent a force of more than 200 men to take him on and trap him. This the British soon did, and after the two sides exchanged musket fire for a few minutes, Allen’s force was overwhelmed, with Allen himself being captured. For the better part of three years, Allen was held as a prisoner by the British, spending the majority of the time in chains or in dirty, dark prisons. Following his release, Allen would play a large part in the creation of the Republic of Vermont, which would go on to become the 14th state of the United States.
