Learned colleagues, It’s that time of the year – ELECTION TIME!!! I’ve decided to run as a student representative from law on the Academic Board. The Academic Board advises the UTS Council on academic issues and creates policy to guide academic programs, scholarship and research at the university. So, why me? Well as many of you know, legal education is very close to my heart. Nothing gives me a high quite like reading a case in its entirety and imagining the judge delivering their ratio. The AGLC has become a dear companion of mine, and I nearly cried upon discovering that Legal Online had been decommissioned, consoled only by the fact that Westlaw AU, the new name for my beloved database, had retained the “Laws of Australia” Encyclopaedia. (Seriously, thank goodness). I keep all my textbooks and have them stacked on my bookshelf in the order I’ve studied the subjects to which they correspond. I admire the minds of judges so much that both times I’ve met former justices of the High Court, I could feel my heart beating in my stomach. Exams, to me, are symbols of perseverance, mental stamina and personal development. The list could go on. As you can probably imagine, therefore, I care about the content and delivery of academic programs at our law school. I firmly believe that a comprehensive and high quality legal education is fundamental to a successful career in legal practice or academia. As such, given the opportunity to represent you on the Academic Board, I will propose and support policies which strengthen the university’s capacity to provide us with the legal knowledge we need as the solicitors, barristers, academics and other professionals of the future. Voting will open on Tuesday 26th August and will close at 3:00pm on Tuesday 9th August. If you think I’m the best person for the role, I’d really appreciate your support.
