Learning About Obedience And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink. Exodus 17:1 (KJV) The wilderness journeys provided Israel with many opportunities to learn about obedience. One of these opportunities is in our text. Israel had been ordered to journey to Rephidim, and they obeyed. But it was a hard journey and ended with a big problem of no water. To examine our text about this journey, we note the precept for obedience, the perspiration in obedience, and the problem after obedience. Precept for obedience. According to the commandment of the Lord. Israel was ordered to take a journey in the wilderness, and they obeyed God and took the journey. Obedience is obeying the commands of God. And obedience is the best way to live your life. But in spite of their obedience, Israel ran into a big problem at the end of this journey. Obedience does not guarantee a life without problems. It only guarantees victories over the problems. Perspiration in obedience. Journeyed from the wilderness of Sin. Israels journey was not easy. Rather their journey was filled with laborious action, for they were journeying through a desert, which is not an easy trip nor a pleasant trip. But obeying the commandments of God is seldom if ever easy. It is often very hard to do what God commands. But it is always worth it. Problem after obedience. There was no water for the people to drink. We normally think that obedience will benefit us quickly, but here obedience burdened Israel with a big water problem. Many times in life God orders us to a Rephidim. We gallantly obey though difficult the trip. But, when we get there we find trouble. Does it pay to obey? Yes indeed, God is only using this trouble to provide an opportunity for our faith to grow and our blessings to be enlarged. At Rephidim God worked a great miracle to provide water—the miracle would really help faith to grow and no water ever tasted better. The problem increased Israels blessings. John G. Butler
