Learning Something New #40 - Have you heard? Monopoly is back at McDonalds! As a kid, I was so excited when Mickey Ds Monopoly time came around. Several thrilling weeks of collecting pieces, comparing with friends and dreaming of stumbling across that elusive Boardwalk sticker. However, this year I likely wont be getting in on the action. Yeah, partly due to the fact that I rarely step into a McDonalds, but also in part because I recently learned about Jerome Jacobson. Jerome Jacobson worked as head of security at Simon Marketing Inc., the company entrusted with running all McDonalds promotions. By 1995, Jacobson was stealing every single rare, valuable Monopoly game piece. This one guy was solely responsible for transporting all the key pieces in sealed envelopes to the plants which manufactured McDonalds food cartons and cups. But Jacobson would slip into airport bathrooms, lock himself in stalls and carefully open the envelopes to steal the pieces. Jacobson received cash kickbacks from his friends who, in turn, would win homes, cars, and cash including the revered million dollar prize. As it turns out, Monopoly at McDonalds was being rigged from the inside for years by their own Hamburglar. Well, at least there is the annual return of The McRib! No? Thats not happening either? Well, crap.
