Learning Something New #92 - John Tyler, the oft-forgotten 10th president of the United States, who was born in 1790, has TWO grandsons that are still alive today! Harrison Ruffin Tyler and Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr. are both grandsons of President John Tyler, a president born a good 60 years before the Civil War even started. Not great-great-great-grandchildren. Their father was Tyler’s son. What? How can this be? Ah, the crafty trick of being an old man who marries a much younger woman. Pres Tyler was 63 when Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born (long time president of the College of William and Mary). And Lyon Gardiner Tyler sired the first of the two living grandchildren when he was 71 years old! It is worth noting that John Tyler had the odds for such a feat in his favor. He fathered fifteen children, more than any other U.S. president. Eight with his first wife and seven more with his second wife - a woman thirty years younger than him.
