Learning a new operating system. Over the past two days, Ive been experimenting with Ubuntu. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Ubuntu is a free distribution of Linux. My old Dell Netbook, with WindowsXP was the test platform since XP is no longer supported by Microsoft (bastards). Prior to the installation, WindowsXP took over 10 minutes to boot. With Ubuntu, its less than 90 seconds. It comes with Mozillas Firefox browser, which is lightyears better than Internet Explorer, and you can download thousands of free applications like Thunderbird, one of the best email programs Ive ever used. Yes, there are things that will still require my big laptop when we travel, but for short trips, this little Netbook now has all the capability I need to check email, the web, and even connect into my customers systems for support. Cant teach an old dog new tricks? Woof.
