Learning to Appreciate 433. I got up this morning with a list of things to do, and after getting on the freeway, realized that I need to get back in the practice of taking a sabbath. I put the list aside and Ive given it a shot, despite heavy reservations. Periodically Ive tried to remember the point of a sabbath rest -- You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God [and not YOUR activity] brought you out from there... -- but the idea doesnt surmount the feeling that I am wasting time. I did nothing for the last 30 minutes...but I couldve done X in preparation for Y. I did nothing useful for the last 90 minutes...and if Id done Z instead, I couldve gotten out in front of A, B, and C...and I still havent finished X. At this moment I feel more stressed, anxious, and tired from thinking about the opportunity cost of every moment of absent productivity, than I do after a full day of work. I do remember the wisdom of the famous saying -- How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice... -- even as the result of practice feels exactly like 433.
